The 2012 Microsurface Program will begin July 9 and end in September of 2012.

Project Background

Microsurfacing involves the installation of a thin, latex modified, asphalt wearing course. The application will be placed in two lifts, generally on consecutive days, with the combined thickness of approximately 3/8".  New striping and pavement markings will be applied to the finished surface within a couple of weeks.

Unlike resurfacing a roadway with new asphalt, microsurfacing is a maintenance technique that improves ride quality and extends the life of the pavement. Because microsurfacing is a less expensive than resurfacing the roadway, the program allows the City to do more with its limited roadway maintenance budget.

Project Description

The 2012 Microsurface Pavement Maintenance Program includes the following sections of pavement:

  • Audrey Avenue: Route 59 to Fort Hill Drive
  • Sanctuary Lane:  Fort Hill Drive to Rickert Drive
  • Tudor Drive: North Aurora Road to Brookdale Road
  • Commons Road: William Penn Drive to West Street
  • Wehrli Road: 75th Street to 87th Street
  • Modaff Road: Knoch Knolls Road to Danbury Drive
  • Gateshead Drive: Modaff Road to Haddassah Drive
  • Knoch Knolls Road: River Drive to Scottsbridge Road
  • Whispering Hills Drive: Aurora Avenue to Jefferson Avenue

The microsurfacing work  is generally performed during off-peak traffic hours (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Overnight work (7 p.m. to 6 a.m.) is occasionally permitted in locations where daytime traffic is heavy throughout the day.

The city will work with its contractor to cause as little disruption to businesses, residents and the motoring public as possible. The roadway shall generally remain open to traffic with lane restrictions and may include temporary one way restrictions. Access to commercial and business driveways shall be maintained during business hours.

The microsurface mix will stick to shoes, bicycles and automobile tires so please do not plan to drive or walk on the surface until it is completely dry (typically about 2 hours). The roadway will be completely open to vehicular traffic by 4 p.m. for daytime operations and 6 a.m. for nighttime operations.

After the microsurface application, the pavement will initially have a course appearance. After a few months, the excess surface aggregate will wear off and leave a smoother finish. As a surface applied material, two to three seams will also be visible in the pavement. As the microsurface material is overlapped between passes, these seams may be slightly raised.  These seams are normal and will not affect the performance of the pavement.

Public Outreach

Homeowners and businesses adjacent to the project will be notified a few days before construction begins on their street. Updates on this project will be made available on this web page throughout the duration of the project.

On-street parking is not allowed on the night that the microsurface treatment is applied. Driveways may be inaccessible for 3 to 5 hours during the time work is underway.
