Project Description
The City of Naperville has contracted with Sak Construction to rehabilitate approximately 11,520 linear feet of sanitary sewer mains, located in Naper Carriage Hill. The existing sewer was constructed using vitrified cal\\lay pipe, which is prone to leakage and vulnerable to tree root intrusion. The rehabilitation process, known as Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) is accomplished by inserting a resin-impregnated flexible felt tube. This tube is inflated with compressed air and cured with steam to form a monolithic, structural-grade lining inside of the existing pipe. This new lining seals out tree roots and groundwater infiltration, reducing maintenance requirements and adding 50 to 100 years to the useful life of the sewer main. The most important benefit of this rehabilitation is the reduction of wet-weather flows. By sealing out unwanted groundwater, we prevent sanitary sewer overflows that cause residential sewer back-ups.
Steps
- The first step in the process is cleaning and video inspection of the pipeline. This process is similar to the ongoing maintenance performed by city crews, and should have little or no effect on you and your neighbors.
- The second step is the insertion and curing of the lining tube. This involves a full day of work. Depending on the location of the sewer manholes, your street may be reduced to a single lane of traffic for all or part of the day. There will be pumps and hoses set up to “bypass” the sewage around the work area. You will be asked to limit your use of water since your sewer service will be blocked off during the installation. We also ask that you to take a few minutes and pour a cup of clean water down your floor drain; this will keep the trap full and will prevent sewer gases from getting into your home. No resident will be without service for more than twelve hours. Sax Construction will notify all residents a few days before work is to begin in the neighborhood.
Naperville has used this type of process with several contractors over the past 18 years, and we anticipate a smooth and successful installation. The cleaning and inspection phase will commence in February 2012. Sax Construction trucks will display magnetic placards identifying them as an authorized city contractor and they will use barricades and traffic cones as required by city standards. Please do not approach the equipment while work is in process. As with all construction and industrial operations, protective clothing such as hard hats and safety eyewear is required.
The entire project will take about three months. Cleaning and televising will commence in February. Insertion of the liners is expected to late February. We expect all operations to be completed by the end of April. This process does not involve digging, but there may be some lawn damage due to the presence of workers and equipment in the parkways. Sak Construction is responsible for restoration of any landscape damage and this will be done when weather permits.
