About the Test Track

As one of the first facilities of its kind, the Naperville Auto Test Track provides a way for automobile customers to safely test drive passenger cars, light trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUV) in a closed environment. The track is designed to allow drivers to experience everyday road conditions during their test drive, such as asphalt roadway, a railroad crossing, cobblestone surface area, suburban driveway, high bank testing area, skid pad and an SUV testing area with a hill climb and rough road section.

History of the Project

testrackpictureIn early 2002, the City of Naperville and the Naperville Development Partnership (NDP) began pursuing the idea of a test track as a way to reduce the number of test drives being conducted within residential neighborhoods. Later that same year, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad sold their auto storage facility property to Centerpoint Properties. This sale sparked the formation of a collective partnership between the City of Naperville, the NDP, Centerpoint Properties and area car dealers that would bring the idea of the Test Track to fruition.

The city hired a consultant to prepare a preliminary design for the Test Track in spring 2004. Focus groups were held by the City of Naperville and area auto dealers to determine which features and amenities should be included in the design. Once the preliminary design was complete, interested dealerships signed the Naperville Test Track Association membership agreement, through which all parties agreed to participate and share the costs to operate and maintain the facility. By fall 2005, ten dealerships had executed agreements and the city directed its consultant to finalize the design and plans for the facility. In May 2006 construction of the Test Track was underway.
