Program Information

The Citizen Police Academy, established in 1995, is a 13-week program designed to give participants a working knowledge of the Naperville Police Department. It consists of a series of classroom presentations, open discussions and hands-on demonstrations held once a week on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. There are two academy programs held every year, one in the spring and one in the fall. Each class size is limited to 30 people, and there is no cost involved to the citizen.

The Citizen Police Academy provides an in-depth view into the Naperville Police Department and an excellent overview of law enforcement in general. It is an educational and informative program that affords citizens the opportunity to learn about the issues that affect law enforcement efforts in the City of Naperville. Our goal is to create a better understanding of police initiatives, improve mutual communication and build a solid partnership between the citizens and police through education. Our mission is to collectively establish a safer community for all.

Community oriented policing plays a vital role in reducing crime in any community. When residents enjoy a closer relationship with their neighbors and the police, they will take a more personal interest in the protection of their neighborhood and community. To this end, the Naperville Police Department instituted the Citizen Police Academy to improve knowledge and enhance communication with the objective of obtaining citizen input and increasing support throughout the city. It is our hope the graduates will become partners with us in identifying problems and solutions to crime issues that may affect our community. Graduates will take their knowledge back into their neighborhoods where they can apply it to their daily lives and enhance the quality of neighborhood life.

Upon completion of the course, graduates receive a certificate of completion. In addition, graduates are encouraged to join the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, which gives them the opportunity for continued education in the field of law enforcement and other related areas. It also allows them to have a more interactive relationship with the police department if they choose.
