Within the overall concept of community policing is the process of problem solving. Basic to this process is a technique referred to as the SARA Model which is an acronym for: Scanning - Analysis - Response - Assessment.
The problem solving model functions as follows:
Scanning - looking for and identifying the problem, (Note: a problem is defined as two or more like incidents).
Analysis - learning the problem’s causes, scope and effects. Attempt to identity the actors, incidents and responses.
Response - select and implement a solution with one of the following as the goal: a) reduce the problem; or b) eliminate the problem.
Assessment - determine if the response worked. Decide to adjust response or start again if needed.
The use of the SARA model provides for more efficient, effective police responses to community problems.
