What Is It All About?

WTSDaylogo06Each year, hundreds of students and parents from Naperville along with several city officials celebrate Walk to School Day in Naperville.

The City of Naperville encourages all schools in Naperville to participate in this international program that strives to promote the many benefits of walking to school, including:

  • Increased physical act ivity,
  • Reduced traffic congestion and vehicle speed near schools,
  • Teaching safe walking skills to children,
  • Promoting pedestrian friendly neighborhoods, and
  • Awareness of environmentally friendly transportation options.

Promoting pedestrian safety remains a driving goal of the Walk to School event, and pedestrian-friendly streets are a vital component of the city's Comprehensive Transportation Plan. It is through programs like Walk to School Day where the future generations of Naperville will learn the importance of pedestrian-friendly streets and the overall benefits of walking or biking on a daily basis.

Walkers from Naperville will be joining students from many countries around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day. Kids can help celebrate Walk to School Day and raise awareness by asking a friend or neighbor to walk to school with them. All Naperville families are encouraged to participate in each year's Walk to School Day festivities by walking or biking to school together.

How Can I Participate?

All students can participate by simply walking to school during the first week of October. The City of Naperville provides recommended school walk routes for area schools to encourage safe travel.

Area schools and organizations can encourage children to participate in “Walk to School Day” by sponsoring a walking event. Contact area schools to find out if an event is planned in your neighborhood. If you would like more information on planning an event for your school, please visit www.walktoschool.org Outbound Link Icon.
