About the Project
The City of Naperville is committed to eliminating sanitary sewer backups that are caused by heavy rainfall. Backups occur during heavy rains because water enters the sanitary sewer system through cracks and other defects in sewer mains, manholes and residential service laterals.
Residential service laterals are a major point of entry for unwanted rainwater and groundwater. The Department of Public Utilities is using cured-in-place-pipelining (CIPP) to create a strong, durable and seamless lining inside of the existing residential service laterals. This three-step process involves very little excavation.
The City of Naperville Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is now in the tenth year of a comprehensive sewer rehabilitation program. The goal of this program is to eliminate sewer backups by finding and fixing defects that allow rainwater and groundwater into the system.
The Department of Public Utilities maintains a network of 39 flow-monitoring devices that are strategically located within the sewer system to pinpoint areas where system rehabilitation is needed. The sewer inspection team uses state-of-the-art camera equipment to identify pipelines needing rehabilitation.
Based on the flow monitor results, the primary focus of sewer rehabilitation programs has been, and will continue to be, in older residential areas near Downtown Naperville. Work is underway in the Maplebrook South, Century Hills, and Huntington Commons.
Customers who desire more information on sanitary sewer rehabilitation programs should call (630) 420-6137.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be home? No you do not need to be home all the work is done by the outside cleanout and the cities sanitary sewer main. If access is needed a City Representative will contact you.
Will there be any disruption to my services? The only interruption you will be affected is during the actual lining process, you will be asked to not use any water, this includes flushing toilets, laundry, showers etc. This could be up to 4 hours duration. We will attempt to notify all effected customers and give enough notice so as not to cause too much disruption.
I received a notice that the lining project was going to start on a specific date it appears that nothing was done, who should I contact? Contact DPU-Water (630) 420-6137.
Why so many notices? Our goal is to keep you informed during each step of the lateral lining.
When will I know my sanitary sewer service has been lined? The contractor will inform you of the completion, either verbally or by leaving written notification.
How much will this cost me? There are no costs to our customers for the lining from the cleanout to main.
Will the lateral liner reduce any future need for maintenance on my sanitary sewer service line? The newly lined portion of your sanitary sewer service will require little to no maintenance. However, the unlined portion may still need periodic maintenance.
Will the contractor line additional sanitary sewer service, such as from the cleanout to my house? You can call Performance Pipelining at (815) 482-0080 and discuss this with them. Any additional lining that you have done is an agreement between you and Performance Pipelining not the City of Naperville.
Who do I contact if I have questions or concerns? Call DPU-Water at (630) 420-6137.
What do I do if I smell an odd odor after the liner is installed? If there is an odd odor call DPU-Water (630) 420-6137.
