How Do I Purchase a Garbage Cart?

Garbage Cart Notice

All sizes of garbage carts are availabile for purchase at the Dept. of Public Works and City Hall Finance.

What is a Garbage Cart?

Naperville residents (those within the city limits) who currently receive curbside garbage collection from the city’s contractor, Allied Waste Services, can purchase a wheeled residential garbage cart.  The dark green carts are available in three sizes:

  • Garbage Cart Photo32-gallon
(holds approximately 2 tall kitchen bags of garbage)
  • 68-gallon
    (holds approximately 4 bags)
  • 95-gallon
    (holds approximately 6 bags)

These durable, plastic wheeled carts are designed specifically for residential customers. The garbage carts are designed to be lifted mechanically by garbage trucks. They feature a permanently attached lid, a handle that allows for easy maneuvering and have a ten-year warranty against manufacturer's defects.  They are convenient and easy to store and use.

Do I Need a Garbage Cart

Residents are not required to purchase a garbage cart. Participation in the cart program is completely voluntary. These carts are being offered to Naperville residents because of their convenience and ease of use. The pricing offered by the city also makes these carts an excellent value.

Oversized Garbage Cans Not Permitted
One of the provisions of the city’s residential refuse contract with Allied Waste is that residents are required to use garbage containers that are 32-gallons or less in size, weighing less than 60-pounds when filled. This regulation is strictly enforced. The only containers larger than 32-gallons that are allowed are the wheeled residential garbage carts that are purchased from the City of Naperville. Garbage carts purchased from the city are lifted mechanically by the garbage trucks and are not subject to size regulations; however the weight restriction is 220 pounds.

Why can't I use a regular garbage can that's bigger than 32-gallons? They sell them at the hardware stores in Naperville.
Containers larger than 32-gallons that are filled above the 60-pound limit have caused injuries to Allied Waste drivers. That's why the size and weight limitations for containers other than garbage carts purchased from the city are strictly enforced. The city strongly encourages the use of the wheeled garbage carts for your safety as well as the refuse truck drivers.  Carts make it easy to store and move larger quantities of refuse, and they protect the refuse from animals once it is at the curb.

Why can't I purchase a cart from a home improvement store? They look the same.
Not all carts are the same. The carts sold by home improvement and hardware stores may not be compatible with the lifting devices on the Allied Waste garbage trucks. That is why the city adopted an ordinance making the carts sold by the city the only ones that are allowed. Carts sold by home improvement stores are usually lesser quality and do not come with a 10-year warranty. The prices charged by the city are typically less than home improvement and hardware stores charge for similarly sized carts.

When will my garbage cart be delivered?
When the additional $10 delivery charge is paid with the order every effort will be made to deliver each cart within 30 days. In most cases carts are delivered within 10 days of the order receipt. Residents may prefer to pick up a new cart at one of the two purchase locations if they need it sooner.  There is no need to prepay online if picking up the cart.

Can I use these carts for recycling?
No, these carts are to be used for garbage only. The carts are designed to be used with the automated collection equipment on the garbage trucks. They are prone to damage when physically lifted into recycling trucks

I live in unincorporated Naperville. Can I buy a cart?
No, these carts are only for Naperville residents serviced under the city's contract with Allied Waste Services. (Unincorporated homes usually have addresses such as 7S241 or 31W331.)
