On May 18, 2011 the City of Naperville hosted a public open house to present the upcoming construction plans for the final phase of the Steeple Run Watershed Project. Click here to view posters that were presented at the open house.
Overview
In 2004, the City of Naperville, in partnership with DuPage County began construction to implement the Huffman Street Flood Control Plan. Initial work included the expansion of the existing stormwater detention basin in Country Commons. A few years later, work continued with the installation of two parallel large box culvert systems beneath Huffman Street. The culverts were installed to add stormwater storage capacity from just west of Country Commons to Chicago Avenue. Stormwater will drain through these culverts from north to south into the West Branch of the DuPage River. All this initial work was completed in 2010.
The final phase of improvements to the Country Commons basin includes the installation of a floodwall and connection to the Huffman Street storm sewer system. Click here to view a drawing showing the proposed improvements.
Benefits to the Area
The residents of the area will experience several benefits as part of the upcoming phase of the Country Commons construction project. The following will occur:
- Reconstruction of the deteriorated embankment wall and construction of a new flood wall;
- Connection to the Huffman Street storm sewer system.
- In cooperation with the Naperville Park District, a new playground, basketball court and parking lot will be consolidated along the west edge of the basin in order to replace the aging facilities. These facilities will be installed after the completion of the stormwater improvements for Country Commons.
