Naperville Fire Department Battles Structure Fire on 5000 Block of Bamboo Lane

On Wednesday evening (06/29/2016) at 6:11 PM, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a call from an alarm monitoring company reporting a fire alarm activation at the 5000 block of Bamboo Ln.

PSAP dispatched a single vehicle response to investigate the activated fire alarm. 2 minutes later PSAP received a 911 call from the occupant reporting a fire inside the single family home.

PSAP immediately upgraded the response to a general alarm assignment consisting of 3 engine companies, 2 truck companies, 1 squad, 2 ambulances, 2 alternate response vehicles, an incident commander and a safety officer to the scene, 26 personnel.

Naperville’s Fire Engine 6 was first on the scene, within 6 minutes, and reported nothing showing from the outside of a two story single family residence. The engine 6 company officer confirmed that the teenage occupant had exited, was safe and no other occupants were inside. Crews made entry and determined the fire was located in the basement and immediately began suppression efforts. Companies on the scene were able to extinguish the fire in less than 10 minutes and began immediate salvage and overhaul efforts to reduce damage and confirm no additional fire extension.

The home sustained damage to the basement and some smoke staining to the interior but was deemed habitable by the Transportation Engineering and Development (TED) Inspector on the scene. The residents were allowed back into the home after fire response vehicles cleared the scene.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, originating from a motorized two wheeled toy scooter, that had overheated. The Naperville Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Naperville Police Department, Naperville Transportation, Engineering and Development (TED) and the Plainfield Fire Protection District. The Oswego Fire Protection District provided station coverage during this incident.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters or citizens.
