Naperville Fire Department Receives Edward Hospital E.M.S. System Call of the Quarter

Earlier this month, representatives from the Edward Hospital Emergency Medical Services System (EHEMSS) presented Naperville Fire Department crew members from Fire Station No. 4 with the EHEMSS Call of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2016. Recipients of the award were Shift 1 members of Engine 4 and Medic 4, which includes Lieutenant Brian Michor and Firefighter/Paramedics Lee Graefen, Brian Peters, Kevin Sashko and Paul Redmon.

In February of this year, Fire personnel were dispatched to a residence on the northwest side of Naperville for a citizen having a seizure. The first crew arrived on the scene less than five minutes after the call was received by Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point. Upon arrival crews quickly assessed the situation and determined that, in addition to having a seizure, the patient was pulseless and not breathing. During resuscitation efforts the crew was faced with numerous obstacles, including the patient’s location inside the residence, treatment of life-threatening cardiac rhythms that changed a number of times throughout the incident and a dangerously low blood pressure that had to be corrected.

Edward Hospital’s Emergency Room staff was notified early in the incident to let them know about the critical patient that was being transported to their facility. A “cardiac alert” was initiated by Fire crew members in the field which mobilized an in-hospital specialty team that met the crew at the Emergency Room doors as soon as the ambulance arrived. The early notification of the in-hospital team allowed for a rapid assessment and much quicker move to the cardiac operating room to correct the life-threatening conditions.

Due to the quick actions taken by the members of Engine 4 and Medic 4, along with early notification to hospital Emergency Room staff, the patient survived the initial life threatening conditions.

This call was selected from 30 entries submitted by six agencies that work in the Edward Hospital E.M.S. System.  This call will also be reviewed with three other Call of the Quarter selections from 2016 and considered for the second annual EHEMSS Call of the Year.
The award was presented to crew members on Friday, July 8 by Dr. Daryl Wilson, Project Medical Director of the Edward Hospital Emergency Medical Services System. A letter from Edward-Elmhurst Healthcare CEO Pam Davis commending the actions of the team members was also presented to the crew by Dr. Wilson.  The award presentation took place at Naperville Fire Station No. 4 at 1961 Brookdale Road.
