Introduction

The City of Naperville, Illinois is a dynamic community of 144,560 residents, located 28 miles west of Chicago.  Money Magazine recently named Naperville as the second best city in the United States in which to live.  We have gained national recognition for our family-friendly environment, excellent schools and library system, low crime rate and vibrant downtown area.  Our municipal government employs over 1,000 dedicated individuals in a wide range of job categories.

The Naperville Fire Department is responsible for protecting approximately 150,000 (daytime population of 200,000) lives in a 50 square mile area.  A nationally accredited agency, the Naperville Fire Department's mission is to safeguard the lives and property of the citizens of Naperville. This is accomplished by providing professional, quality fire prevention and public education programs as well as effective and efficient fire suppression, emergency medical, rescue and other emergency services.

Over the past two decades, the Naperville Fire Department has experienced rapid growth. The Fire Department has nine fire stations in operation, with one more under construction. Currently, the department has authorized strength of more than 200 personnel. The department is manned 24 hours per day and operates seven front line engines, one heavy rescue squad, seven front line paramedic ambulances, four front line ladder trucks, and one front line battalion chief vehicle.


Eligibility Requirements

The Naperville Board of Fire and Police Commissioners are charged with the appointment of all Firefighter/Paramedics. To be considered for employment, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Starting in 2010, all applicants must submit proof of having successfully completed the “Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)" within a one year period prior to the date of the written test.

  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED) at time of application;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license, which will be used for identification at all phases of testing;
  • Be 21 years of age, but not older than 34 years of age by the date of orientation except as otherwise provided by state statute;
  • Attend orientation and all phases of testing;
  • Possess good moral character;
  • Pass a polygraph test;
  • Pass a thorough background investigation;
  • Pass a medical examination including a psychological assessment and a functional physical evaluation;
  • Must be licensed as a paramedic in any state at the time of application, and must be licensed in IL at time of job offer. Must retain EMT-PARAMEDIC Certification for a minimum of 10 years after date of hire.

Testing and Selection Process

The Fire Department seeks individuals with a high degree of personal and professional integrity to participate in a competitive process to establish an eligibility register for the Firefighter/Paramedic position. Eligibility testing occurs every other year.

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners are currently recruiting for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic.

Applications will be available January 13, 2010.

An eligible list of candidates is established in numeric order based on scores received on the written examination and any verified veteran’s preference points.


Wages and Benefits 

The Firefighter/Paramedic position is non-exempt, paid by an hourly wage negotiated between the City of Naperville and the International Association of Firefighters Local 4302. The hourly wage rate for the fiscal year '09-'10 is $22.6336/hr. Expressed on an annualized basis, this equates to $58,734.32. Other benefits include:
