The Parking Guidance Systems are now installed. They are currently in testing phase. The system is expected to be fully operational in early August 2010.

What is a Parking Guidance System?

Parking Guidance Systems monitor the number of vehicles entering and exiting parking structures. This information helps to determine the number of parking spaces available inside a parking deck. The number of spaces available is then  posted at the parking deck entrance(s) to indicate the number of available parking spaces within the garage.

Following is the proposed sign for the Parking Guidance Systems:

Parking Guidance Systems in Downtown Naperville

The City of Naperville will install Parking Guidance Systems at two parking facilities in Downtown Naperville - the Central Parking Facility and the Van Buren Avenue Parking Deck.

Information about the number of available parking spaces will be posted at the entrance of each deck, as well as on the city's Web site to help visitors identify parking availability in advance of their trip to Downtown Naperville.

Why is the City Installing the Parking Guidance Systems?

Parking in downtown Naperville can be somewhat challenging during high traffic/peak times. Motorists oftentimes circulate through various parking lots instead of using one of the two main parking facilities due to the uncertainty of the availability of spaces within the structure.

The Parking Guidance Systems will help to:

  • To provide motorists with real time information regarding the availability of parking within each parking deck
  • Increase utilization of the parking decks
  • Reduce unnecessary circulation and vehicle emissions within the downtown
  • Provide an internet interface that will allow downtown visitors to identify parking availability in advance of their trip
  • Collect 24/7 utilization information to monitor the need for additional parking spaces or other operational changes

Project Funding

Approximately 50 percent of the project costs will be paid by an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant from the Department of Energy through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The remainder of the project will be funded by the City of Naperville and Special Service Assessment funds.

Schedule/Status

The Parking Guidance Systems at the Central Parking Facility and the Van Buren Parking Deck are slated for installation by early August 2010.
