The Naperville Riverwalk Commission held an open house January 22, 2013 to allow the public to view and comment on a proposal to extend the southern limit of the Naperville Riverwalk from Hillside Road to Martin Avenue.
The following are exhibits from the open house:
While the City Council approved and set the existing Riverwalk boundaries in 1993, recent developments on the south side of Hillside Road have sparked the consideration to possibly extend the Riverwalk south of Hillside Road to Martin Avenue. The proposed extension would have benefits to the area including an improved north/south pedestrian connection to access downtown amenities and businesses. The Riverwalk Commission was directed by the City Council at its October 16, 2012, meeting to conduct a feasibility study to consider a project overview; public support; operation and maintenance costs; and funding sources.

The Naperville Riverwalk was created in 1981 as a permanent commemorative to honor Naperville’s 150th anniversary. Embraced as a gathering place for all ages, the linear park is a focal point of the community. Its covered bridges, fountains, landscaping and distinctive shepherd’s crook light poles are symbolic of Naperville’s ties to its historic past as the oldest settlement in DuPage County. In the early 1980s, residents donated their time, money and materials to transform a once-forgotten riverfront into a beautiful park that is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
The Riverwalk is highlighted with exceptional amenities along its path. To the east, visitors enjoy the stunning beauty of Fredenhagen Park with its landmark clock tower and Exchange Club Memories Fountain. Midway, the Dandelion Fountain, Paddleboat Quarry, and unique bell tower can be found. Further west is historic Centennial Beach – a popular family destination – Centennial Park with its inline skating/skateboarding facility and the Jaycee Playground – an ADA-accessible recreational area.

Through the years, the City of Naperville and the Naperville Park District have maintained agreements with the Riverwalk Commission and Foundation for the maintenance and preservation of this important landmark. In much the same way that the Riverwalk was created, through community partnerships, its legacy is protected through these cooperative relationships.
