Construction work for the final phase of Old Plank in the Steeple Run Watershed Project is also underway, which will expand the existing detention area in the Old Plank basin to accommodate additional stormwater storage during major storm events. History

In July 1996, a storm moved through Naperville and unleashed between 8 and 10 inches of rain over a 24- hour period. According to the American Meteorological Society’s Journal of Applied Meteorology, this severe weather event was considered one of the most costly weather disasters in Illinois. The large amount of rainfall experienced during this storm left many homes on Huffman Street with serious stormwater problems.

To determine measures that would help to protect homes in this area from future flooding, the City of Naperville and DuPage County prepared a Watershed Study. From that study, the Huffman Street Flood Control Plan was identified. The goal of this plan is to protect homes along Huffman Street and improve the overall quality of life for residents living in the Steeple Run Watershed.

In 2004, the City of Naperville, in partnership with DuPage County, began construction to implement the Huffman Street Flood Control Plan. The project is slated for completion in 2012.

A map detailing the project areas is provided below:

Project Overview

The improvements in the Steeple Run Watershed Project are focused on minimizing the flooding impacts to Huffman Street. The proposed improvements can be categorized into the following major components:

Steeple_Run_Image

Huffman Street: Work included the construction of large sewer pipes on Huffman Street, which will drain the stormwater from the Country Commons basin to East Green Park.  Completed in 2010!

Old Plank: Work includes increased capacity of the detention area, replacement of deteriorated storm sewer sections, and relocation of the playground.  Major work is expected to be completed in Fall 2011. For additional details on the project, as well as a project timeline, click here

Country Commons: In 2006, work was completed to increase the stormwater storage capacity in the Country Commons basin.  The remaining work to be completed at Country Commons includes reconstruction of the embankment, construction of a new flood wall, and connection to the Huffman Street storm sewer.  Major work is scheduled for completion in Summer 2012.
