DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall announced today that bond has been set for a Naperville man accused of shooting two men during an alleged drug deal. Yusef Syed, 19 (d.o.b. 10/10/1999) of 25W219 Concord Road, appeared in Bond Court this afternoon where Judge Timothy McJoynt set bond at $250,000 with 10% to apply. Syed has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Battery With a Firearm (Class X Felony), two counts of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Class 4 Felony) and one Count of Possession of Cannabis With Intent to Deliver (Class 3 Felony.)

On May 18, 2019, officers with the Naperville Police Department responded to Edward Hospital after two males arrived at the hospital with gunshot wounds. One had been shot in the lower torso causing injury to his spinal cord and the other male had been shot three times in the legs. It is alleged that on May 18, 2019, at approximately 11:12 p.m., the two men met Syed in a parking lot on Fitness Drive in Naperville to purchase cannabis. It is alleged that one of the men grabbed a bag of cannabis from Syed’s lap as he sat in his vehicle and that both men then ran away. It is alleged that Syed pursued them in his vehicle and that he shot the men as he pursued them. It is alleged that following the shooting, Syed fled the scene. An investigation into the shooting conducted by the Naperville Police Department led to Syed who was taken into custody without incident as he attempted to leave his home the following afternoon.

“The charges against Mr. Syed illustrate that in the illegal underworld of drug dealers and their customers, things can turn potentially fatal in an instant,” Berlin said. “Thankfully, the injuries sustained by the victims in this case, while very serious, do not appear to be life-threatening. I would like to thank the Naperville Police Department for their outstanding work in quickly identifying and apprehending Mr. Syed as a suspect in this case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Helen Kapas and Steven Lupa for their efforts on this case."

"I would like to recognize the efforts of our patrol and investigations divisions for their efficient efforts to identify and apprehend the offender in this case in such a timely manner," said Marshall. "I would also like to thank the members of the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office for their collaboration on this case."

Syed’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 17, 2019, for arraignment in front of Judge Robert Miller. He faces a possible penalty of between twelve to sixty years in the Illinois Department of Corrections if convicted on all counts.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
