Firefighters Extinguish Structure Fire in the 1400 Block of Fairway Drive

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — At 9:47 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a 911 call from a fire alarm monitoring company regarding a multifamily residence in the 1400 block of Fairway Drive, reporting an activated fire alarm. Naperville 911(PSAP) dispatched one engine, one truck and one rescue vehicle to the scene. The alarm was upgraded to a general alarm assignment following additional 911 calls from tenants at that location reporting a fire in the third-floor apartment. The first fire company on the scene found smoke from the third-floor unit and activation of the sprinkler system. The general alarm assignment brought 12 pieces of fire apparatus and 26 fire personnel to the scene.

The first fire department units arrived on scene at 9:52 p.m., within five minutes of the initial call. When fire personnel entered the third-floor unit they found a fire in the kitchen that was controlled by the activated sprinklers in the unit. The engine company advanced a hose line into the unit to complete the extinguishment of the fire. Salvage and overhaul operations were completed in the third-floor unit and the apartments directly below the fire-floor apartments. Nine adults and three children exited their apartments prior to the arrival of the fire department. An inspector from Naperville’s Transportation Engineering and Development (TED) was also notified. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental due to cooking.

One resident of the unit where the fire was extinguished was treated for injuries and did not require further medical attention. Three apartment units were deemed uninhabitable due to smoke and water damage. The American Red Cross was notified to provide assistance to the occupants.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Naperville Police Department. The West Chicago Fire Department provided coverage for Naperville fire stations during this incident. There were no injuries to firefighters on the scene.
