Naperville Firefighters Extinguish Chicago Avenue Deck Fire

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — At 7:52 a.m. on May 4, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a call for a structure fire at a two-story mixed-use (residential over commercial) building located in the 0 block of W. Chicago Ave. Naperville 911(PSAP) dispatched a general alarm assignment consisting of 10 pieces of fire apparatus and 24 personnel, including an incident commander and incident safety officer to the reported address.

At 7:55 a.m. Truck 1 arrived on scene and identified a fire on a second story deck on the rear of the building. Truck 1 completed a 360-degree survey of the structure and assisted one occupant out of the structure. The crew of Truck 1 and supporting suppression units began a fire attack by advancing hose lines to the rear of the building. Crews extinguished the fire within 5 minutes of arrival and the fire was contained to the back deck of the building.

The fire did not spread to the interior or structure of the building and was limited to the deck and its contents. Minor overhaul and ventilation was conducted to expose any areas of high heat and remove smoke from the building.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Naperville Police Department, The Naperville Transportation, Engineering, and Development Team (TED), and Naperville Fire Department Fire Investigators. Station Coverage was not needed for this incident. The fire was investigated by the Naperville fire investigation team and the cause was found to be improper extinguishment of smoking materials. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters while operating on scene. The building was deemed to be habitable by the Naperville TED Department.
