Naperville Firefighters Extinguish a Structure Fire that Originated from a Charcoal Grill

At 11:40 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a call for a possible structure fire at the residential building located in the 2200 block of Keim Rd. Naperville 911 (PSAP) immediately dispatched a general alarm assignment consisting of 10 pieces of fire apparatus and 24 personnel including an Incident Commander and Incident Safety Officer to the reported address.

Upon arrival of Engine 2 at 11:45 p.m., crews found a 2-story residence. Engine 2 initially reported nothing showing, however upon completion of a 360-degree survey of the structure the first arriving company found a deck fire with extension into the attic of the home. Two occupants were home at the time of the fire and were able to exit the structure on their own along with two cats. Suppression units and personnel began an aggressive interior fire attack. Crews advanced hose lines to the attic of the home, finding fire and heavy smoke conditions. Crews extinguished the fire within 15 minutes of arrival, and the fire was contained to the attic. With the fire under control, suppression units on scene began to ventilate and initiate overhaul efforts to expose any hidden fire or areas of high heat. The area of origin was a charcoal grill on the deck of the home, which ignited the deck and siding of the home and extended into the attic.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Naperville Police Department and the Bolingbrook Fire Department. Station Coverage for Naperville Fire stations was provided by the Westmont Fire Department, the Plainfield Fire Protection District, the Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District and the Winfield Fire Protection District. The fire has been ruled accidental with a known cause and origin. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters while operating on scene. The home was deemed to be habitable.
