Naperville Firefighters Extinguish Hotel Fire on 1600 Block of W. Diehl Road

At 2:39 p.m. on Thursday (7/02/2020), Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a call for a structure fire at a 3-story hotel located in the 1600 block of W. Diehl Road. Naperville 911 (PSAP) dispatched a general alarm assignment consisting of 10 pieces of fire apparatus and 24 personnel including an Incident Commander and Incident Safety Officer to the reported address. PSAP also advised all occupants to be evacuated from the building.

At 2:43 p.m., Engine 4 arrived on scene and identified smoke and a small fire on a third-floor exterior stairwell of the building. Incoming units completed a 360-degree survey of the structure. The crews of Engine 4 and Engine 7, with supporting suppression units began a fire attack by advancing a hose line to the 3rd floor stairwell. Crews extinguished the fire within 5 minutes of arrival, and the fire was contained to the area of origin. The fire did not communicate to the interior or structural components of the building and was limited to stairwell area. Minor overhaul and ventilation was conducted to expose any areas of high heat and remove smoke from the building. Hotel maintenance attempted to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher prior to Fire Department arrival, slowing the spread of the fire.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Naperville Police Department, the Naperville Transportation, Engineering, and Development Team (TED), and Naperville Fire Department Fire Investigators. Station coverage was provided by the Warrenville Fire Protection District, the Downers Grove Fire Department, the Plainfield Fire Protection District, and the West Chicago Fire Department. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters while operating on scene. The building was deemed to be habitable by the Naperville TED Department, and no occupants were displaced.
