Structure Fire in the 1800 Block of W. Diehl
At 12:34 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received an automatic fire alarm in a four-story hotel. The initial response was a dual response, with Engine 4 and Squad 9 responding. Within seven minutes E4 arrived on scene and reported smoke in the building, which was coming from an air conditioning unit on the north side of the second floor. E4 upgraded to a general alarm for heavy black smoke in the building and flames from the A/C unit on the outside of the structure. A general alarm assignment consists of three engines, two ladder trucks, one squad, two ambulances, and two shift commanders. E4 pulled a hose line and extinguished the fire from the interior hallway.
Three civilians and a dog were removed from the hotel room on the second floor. The two children were removed through the window by firefighters off a ground ladder. The mother and the dog walked out of the hotel through the interior stairs. The mother and two children were later evaluated by EMS personnel on the scene. The mother was transported to Edward Hospital with minor injuries. The two children were left in the care of their father and were not transported to the hospital.
The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Naperville Police Department. Lisle-Woodridge FPD and the Wheaton FD provided coverage for Naperville fire stations during this incident. One firefighter was evaluated at the scene for a minor injury and signed a medical release. Naperville Fire Investigators are currently on scene to determine the cause of this fire.
