Main Street and Washington Street Water Main and Roadway Improvements
UPDATE: WASHINGTON STREET TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGES
Washington Street will have traffic pattern changes between Hillside and Aurora Avenues for utility work related to the upgrade of the water mains in the area. Please be aware of the new traffic patterns and follow the signage directions. Motorists are advised to take caution and allow for extra travel time in the area. Note that crews continue to work on the Downtown Washington Street Bridge Replacement Project nearby.
Once completed, the upgraded water mains will offer improved reliability, with fewer water main breaks and an increased water flow for fire hydrants. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
- Main Street between Hillside Road and Aurora Avenue
- Porter Avenue between Webster Street and Main Street
Upon completion of the water main replacement project, crews will remove the asphalt surface (i.e., milling) and resurface Main Street between Hillside Road and Aurora Avenue to create a smoother road.
Construction Impacts and Accessibility
Work Zones: Streets in the impacted area will remain open to traffic and deliveries and emergency vehicles throughout the project’s duration. On Main Street, the road will narrow to one lane occasionally. Driveways will be accessible during the work day, although there may be temporary disruptions due to the water main installations and water service connections. Contractors will fill any trenches dug across driveways with stone to make them accessible by the end of the workday at 6 p.m. or sooner. Mail delivery, garbage and recycling will not be affected by the construction.
Please note: Crews will do their best to minimize the impact of this work on traffic, but construction involves some level of inconvenience. People should expect temporary delays and intermittent lane closes and intersection closures when moving through the construction zone.
Residential Water Service Impacts
Water mains will remain in service, except in case of emergency. Water service disruptions to individual homes will be limited to a single shut-down for 30 minutes to allow for the transfer of the residential water service from the old main to the new.
