School Programs - 3rd, 4th and 6th Grades

3rd Grade - On Your Own

“On Your Own” is a third grade latchkey program presented to students in Naperville Community Unit School District 203, Indian Prairie School District 204 and all private schools in Naperville by a Community Education/Crime Prevention Specialist. The program helps ensure the students are ready to be safe at home at those times when they are home alone.

“On Your Own” is completed in one classroom period and consists of a presentation followed by discussion with the children on topics they need to be aware of when they are on their own at home. The students also receive a booklet to take home and share with their parents.

4th Grade - Be Smart, Be Safe

The “Be Smart, Be Safe” program is offered in Naperville Community Unit School District 203, Indian Prairie School District 204 and all private schools in Naperville. This is a personal safety program presented in three 45-minute class periods and is taught by a Community Education/Crime Prevention Specialist.

During the first class period, the students learn five basic “Be Smart, Be Safe” rules, which are reinforced through role-play.  They are as follows:  

  • Safety in Numbers. Use the Buddy System.
  • Make sure you tell someone where you are going.
  • Avoid places where you can’t be seen or heard.
  • Remember the Safety Rule: Say NO, GO and TELL.
  • Telephone numbers are handy. Keep important numbers by your phone.

During the second class period students are taught about 9-1-1. They learn what constitutes an emergency and when it is appropriate to call 9-1-1. They are also taught what questions will be asked of them when they call and why. Additionally, students learn how to describe a vehicle and a suspect and how to be good witnesses.

Internet Safety is the topic for the 3rd class period. Students learn the dangers of talking to people they do not know online, whether it is on their smartphone, computer, game system or any of their other electronic devices that can access the internet. Internet Safety Rules are introduced and reinforced through the use of a PowerPoint program developed by Microsoft and the Naperville Police Department.

6th Grade - You Can't Be Too Careful

The sixth grade program “You Can’t Be Too Careful” is offered to students in in Naperville Community Unit School District 203, Indian Prairie School District 204 and private schools in Naperville when requested. This program is taught by a Community Education/Crime Prevention Specialist and a School Resource Officer.

“You Can’t Be Too Careful” addresses personal safety, home security and babysitting safety.  The personal safety program informs students at this age about how “not” to become a “victim of a crime.” When talking to students about home security, they are informed about how they can help keep their homes from being a target of a crime.  The babysitting portion covers information that helps keep students safe when taking babysitting jobs, along with keeping the children safe they are babysitting.  This program includes lecture, role-playing and the use of a video.
