Downtown Streetscape Improvements

Ongoing improvements in Downtown Naperville are part of the multi-year Downtown: Progress in Progress initiative that focuses on continued growth and improvements to enhance the pedestrian experience, improve compliance with accessibility requirements, reconstruct the roadways and repair and replace utilities in the downtown area. 

Current Updates

May 2026 Update: Phase three is currently in design. A Public Information meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, 2026 from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Municipal Center Meeting Room C (400 S Eagle St.)

Resident feedback is requested to help identify preffered streetscape elements to be included in the final design. 

Project Phases

Phase Three - (Anticipated Spring 2027 - Fall 2027):  The third phase of the project will improve Jefferson Ave between Main and Washington streets and Main Street between Jefferson and Van Buren avenues.

Improvements include new water and sanitary mains and services, elimination of lead pipes, updates to roadways and on-street parking spaces, improvements to pedestrian spaces to improve accessibility and safety, new spaces for trees and plantings, and additional outdoor space for businesses. 

This phase is currently in design. 

Phase Two - COMPLETE (February - October 2024): The second phase of the project rebuilt Washington Street between Chicago Avenue and Benton Avenue. Work included utility repairs and upgrades, streetscape modernization, and complete road reconstruction to improve pedestrian mobility, accessibility, and safety in this area. No changes were made to parking along Washington Street.

Phase One - COMPLETE (March - November 2022): The first phase of the project included improvements on Jefferson Avenue between Main and Webster streets and Main Street between Jackson and Jefferson avenues. Improvements included new utility lines, updates to roadway and parking spaces, a completely new streetscape built to current City standards, as well as wider sidewalks and more pedestrian space, more trees and plantings, updated street furniture and light fixtures and additional outdoor amenity areas for businesses.
