Wildlife Issues
Last year, Naperville Animal Control received over 1,100 service call for service regarding wildlife, including many raccoons and skunks with canine distemper. The virus affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems. Raccoons and skunks are pre-disposed to this disease, as are dogs. Your dog can contract the disease if it has not been vaccinated against distemper and comes in contact with a raccoon or skunk with the virus. Most dogs are vaccinated as pups against distemper and should receive annual boosters. Puppies who have not yet been vaccinated are at particularly high risk. To keep your pet safe, it is best to keep your dog on a leash when on walks and scan your backyard before letting your dog out.
