Cook County Convicted Felon Charged with Alleged Illegal Possession of Four Loaded Firearms

(The following is a joint release from the Naperville Police Department and the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.)

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres announced today that Judge Christine Cody has granted the State’s motion to detain pre-trial a Cook County convicted felon accused of illegally possessing multiple loaded firearms. Marcus Carroll, 30 (d.o.b. 10/10/1994) of the 0-100 block of 154th Place, Calumet City, appeared at First Appearance Court last weekend charged with one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Repeat Felony Offender (Class X Felony) and one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon (Class 2).

On May 24, 2025, at approximately 2:03 a.m., Naperville police officers allegedly observed a parked vehicle with a handgun, later determined to be a Glock 43 9mm, with a fifty-round drum magazine, on the floorboard behind the front passenger seat. Officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, allegedly driven by Carroll, after observing the vehicle allegedly commit numerous traffic offenses. When conducting a search of the vehicle, officers allegedly found the Glock 43 now underneath the driver's seat, uncased, loaded and immediately accessible. It is alleged that when searching the vehicle, officers found a partially zipped backpack on the back driver’s side seat containing a Glock 23 .40 caliber with a switch in the rear rendering it fully automatic, a Springfield Hellcat 9mm in a mesh pocket of the backpack, and a Glock 19 9mm in another pouch of the backpack. It is further alleged that all four weapons were loaded with one round in the chamber. Carroll was taken into custody at that time.

“The safety of DuPage County residents remains the top priority of my office,” Berlin said. “With a history of multiple felony convictions, including armed robbery with a firearm and vehicular hijacking, Mr. Carroll is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. The allegation that he was in possession of four loaded weapons, one with a fifty-round drum and another that had been modified to allow it to fire fully automatic, are extremely troubling. Once again, I commend the Naperville Police Department for their vigilant and observant police work that has again led to the removal of dangerous weapons from our streets and quite possibly prevented a future tragedy. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Heather Misura and Anna Derkacz for their work in securing charges against Mr. Carroll.”

“This incident exemplifies the proactive efforts of our officers in identifying and addressing individuals who pose a serious threat to public safety. Recovering a single illegally possessed firearm from a vehicle is troubling; recovering four is deeply concerning,” Arres said. “I commend the officers involved for their courage and dedication in willingly entering a potentially dangerous situation to protect our community. I also extend my sincere appreciation to DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his office for their continued partnership and diligent work on this case.”

Carroll’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 23, 2025, in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
