Structure Fire in the 100 Block of South Washington Street

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — At approximately 7:55 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 4, the Naperville Emergency Communications Center (ECC) received a 911 call reporting flames on the roof of a five-story condominium building located in the 100 block of South Washington Street. Naperville police officers in the area confirmed visible flames from the rooftop.

A general alarm assignment was immediately dispatched, bringing 10 pieces of fire apparatus and 24 personnel to the scene. The first fire company arrived at 7:57 p.m. and confirmed an active fire on the roof. Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines up the stairwell and utilized an aerial ladder to access the roof. While advancing to the fire area, crews also worked to ensure all remaining residents were safely evacuated.

The fire was brought under control and declared fully extinguished at 8:34 p.m. Crews successfully contained the fire to the area surrounding a vent stack that extended through the roof. Personnel remained on scene for approximately 30 additional minutes to check for hot spots and ensure the building’s safety.

Fortunately, there were no injuries to residents, pets, or firefighters, and the building remains habitable. Damage is estimated at more than $20,000. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but the vent stack appears to have been a contributing factor.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Naperville Police Department and the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Department. Station coverage during the incident was provided by the Warrenville Fire Protection District, Lisle-Woodridge Fire Department, and Plainfield Fire Protection District.
