Structure Fire in the 1600 Block of Country Lakes Drive
NAPERVILLE, Ill. — At 9:56 a.m. on Monday, June 30, Naperville's Emergency Communications Center (ECC) received a call reporting a stove on fire at a residence in the 1600 block of Country Lakes Drive. ECC immediately dispatched a full-still assignment to the reported location. The incident was then upgraded to a general alarm assignment based off dispatch information while en route. A general alarm assignment consists of three engines, two ladder trucks, one heavy rescue squad, two medic units and two battalion commanders.
At 10 a.m., Naperville PD arrived on the scene and reported heavy smoke coming from a second-floor unit. NPD officers started evacuating the building, clearing several units below the fire unit. NPD officers attempted to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers, but were unable due to heavy smoke conditions. Both NPD officers were evaluated for possible smoke inhalation, but did not require transport to the hospital for further evaluation.
First arriving companies completed a 360-degree survey of the structure, provided an on-scene report, established command, and began fire operations. Fire Department companies found fire in a second-floor unit of the complex and began immediate suppression efforts, stretching a hose line to the second-floor unit and working to contain and extinguish the fire. Fire department personnel deployed a hose line to the seat of the fire and were able to fully extinguish the fire within 15 minutes of arrival. Companies remained on the scene for an additional 90 minutes to assist with building maintenance and conduct overhaul operations.
The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Naperville Police Department and the City of Naperville's Transportation and Engineering Department. The cause of the fire was determined to be due to cooking. Damages to the unit and complex are estimated at $100,000. No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters. The building complex, including the unit of origin and three other units, are considered uninhabitable.
