Naperville Police Arrest Felon on Probation Allegedly in Possession of a Handgun

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres announced today that Judge Joshua Dieden has granted the State’s motion to detain pre-trial a Cook County convicted felon currently on probation accused of illegally possessing a firearm. Jamon Roberts, 29 (d.o.b. 3/4/1997) of the 22000 block of Millard Avenue, Richton Park, appeared at First Appearance Court this morning charged with one count of Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Weapon – Previous Felony Conviction (Class 2 Felony), one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon (Class 3 Felony) and one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon – No FOID or CCL (Class 4 Felony).

On June 3, 2026, at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers with the Naperville Police Department on routine foot patrol in the Topgolf parking lot allegedly observed the handle of a firearm partially inside/underneath a crossbody bag on the driver's side floorboard of a white Volkswagen. Officers conducted surveillance on the vehicle waiting for an occupant to return. Shortly thereafter, three occupants returned to the vehicle, a male, later identified as Roberts, and two females. It is alleged that Roberts entered the driver's seat of the Volkswagen and was seated within arm's reach of the firearm, at which time one of the officers used his squad car to pin in the front of the Volkswagen. It is alleged that after the occupants exited the vehicle, one of the officers recovered a loaded Glock 19, 9 mm firearm with one bullet in the chamber and fifteen rounds in the magazine in the same location where the gun was previously observed.

"The Naperville Police Department and my office are one hundred percent committed to keeping firearms out of the hands of those who are not legally allowed to possess them," Berlin said. "In this case, as a convicted felon, Mr. Roberts is prohibited from legally owning a firearm. What I find particularly disturbing however, are the allegations that he was illegally in possession of a loaded firearm at a family-friendly recreation facility. Public safety remains the top priority of my administration, and anyone accused of threatening public safety in DuPage County will quickly find themselves arrested, charged and prosecuted. I thank the Naperville Police Department whose proactive efforts allowed us to file weapons charges against an individual who was not legally allowed to own a weapon. I also thank Assistant State's Attorneys Robert Willis and Kelsy Kerr for their work in securing charges against Mr. Roberts and for their ongoing efforts in keeping DuPage County safe from violent criminals."

Roberts' next court appearance is scheduled for June 30, 2026, in front of Judge Ann Celine O'Hallaren Walsh.
