Police Transparency
The Naperville Police Department places a high value on transparency. We feel it is critical to share, communicate and collaborate with the citizens of our city. As we continue to expand our efforts in being transparent, we have created this page to share information, statistics, policy and video with our community. Automated License Plate Readers
The Naperville Police Department uses automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology to enhance public safety and assist officers and investigators in locating stolen vehicles, wanted persons, missing or endangered persons, and vehicles associated with criminal activity. ALPR technology can also provide investigative leads that help identify suspects and witnesses, recover stolen property, and solve crimes.
The Department's use of ALPR technology is governed by departmental policy that establishes requirements for how the technology may be used, who may access the system, how searches are documented, how information is retained and shared, and how system use is audited.

Body-Worn Cameras
The State of Illinois’ Law Enforcement Officer-Worn Body Camera Act dictates most of the requirements included in the Naperville Police Department's body-worn camera policy.
Pursuant to State law, body-worn cameras must be turned on whenever an on-duty, uniformed officer is responding to calls for service or engaged in any law-enforcement related encounter or activity. Certain exceptions do apply and can be found in the public act linked above.
State law also dictates when an officer must stop recording, such as when asked to do so by a victim, witness or someone wishing to report a crime. Again, certain exceptions apply and can be found in the public act linked above.
It is also important to note that if when an officer is lawfully present in any location conducting official duties, he/she can also capture video. This includes private property.

Drones
The Naperville Police Department uses small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS), commonly known as drones, as an additional public safety resource. Drones provide an aerial perspective that can help officers and other first responders support public safety at large events and respond more safely and effectively to emergencies, crimes in progress, and other calls for service.
Drone operations must comply with Illinois law, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, and Naperville Police Department policy.

Crime and Incident Data
Awareness is a key factor in the overall safety of a community. Citizens who are aware of the types of crimes happening in their city are more likely to practice situational awareness, report suspicious activity to police and take proactive steps to avoid victimization.
The Naperville Police Department provides an interactive incident map, raw datasets and semi-annual reports of crime and incident data to keep citizens aware of the types of crimes occurring in the community.
