Tips to Stay Safe Online

PASSWORDS

Make passwords strong! They should include a combination of upper and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols.

PERMANENT

Help kids understand what they post online NEVER truly goes away and may be accessed years later. Think before you post!

PERSONAL INFO

Personal info should NOT shared with others. Discuss what constitutes personal information with your student: full name, address, phone number, school, age, birthday, etc.

PRIVATE

Social media accounts should be set to “Private,” never “Public.” This way, the info is only shared with those that are invited to see it by the user. Check your child’s settings frequently and keep up with the most current privacy safeguards.

PHYSICAL WORLD

Explain to your student that only those individuals they know in their physical world should be a friend, follower, fan, etc. on the internet.

QUESTIONS

Be available to talk, answer questions, and address any concerns your child may have. Engage your student and make them a partner in their online safety by sharing videos and stories about how to be safe online.
