Deck Fire in the 300 Block of Waxwing Avenue

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — At 6:47 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a call about a possible structure fire at a residential occupancy in the 300 block of Waxwing Avenue. PSAP immediately dispatched a general alarm response, consisting of three engines, two ladder trucks, one heavy rescue squad, two medic units and two battalion commanders.

Squad 8 arrived on scene within four minutes, where they found a two-story, wood-framed, multifamily residential structure with smoke emanating from the rear of the home. First-arriving companies completed a 360-degree survey of the occupancy and found a fire on an attached deck in the rear of the home. Crews stretched a 1 3/4-inch handline to the rear of the structure and had the fire out within five minutes of arrival. Crews on the scene confirmed that all occupants had evacuated the house before NFD’s arrival. Overhaul operations on the outside of the home and interior revealed no fire extension was found into the main structure. Fire crews remained on the scene for 30 minutes to look for any fire extension and assist the homeowners.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Naperville Police Department. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Damages to the home and deck are estimated at $15,000. There were no injuries to any firefighters or residents due to the fire. The home was deemed habitable, and residents were returned to their occupancy.
