Emerald Ash Borer

Treating Parkway Ash Trees

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive pest that attacks and kills ash trees, which are native to Illinois and commonplace in Naperville. To combat EAB, the City developed an EAB management plan to protect its urban forest. To learn more, visit the Emerald Ash Borer story page on the City's Open Data Naperville portal.

Treating Private Ash Trees

Homeowners with ash trees on private property have two options: treatment or removal. Naperville's EAB management plan has shown treatment to be successful in protecting parkway ash trees.

To learn about options for treating your ash tree, visit the EAB Network webpage.

If you’ve treated a parkway ash tree, please let the City know about the treatment by filling out an EAB Treatment Form.

Post Treatment

Proper watering is critical in the 4 to 6 weeks after treatment. Watering aids in treatment take-up and lowers tree stress levels.

HOW?

  • Key: A long and slow soaking, not short and fast hosing.
  • Moisten the soil to several inches deep, but don’t overwater.
  • Water under the dripline but focus near the trunk.

WHEN?

  • Water your tree weekly, when less than 1 inch of rain has fallen, from April to September.
