Parkway Trees - Planting by Homeowners
A tree planting permit is required before planting a tree in the parkway. The permit application, available on the City’s Civic Access portal, must be approved before planting takes place. There is no charge for the permit.
Only City-approved trees may be planted in parkways. Before planting a tree, homeowners should refer to the Parkway Tree Species Guide for a list of City-approved parkway tree species. Homeowners should also refer to the parkway tree planting guidelines when choosing a location for the new tree to prevent future traffic visibility problems and utility conflicts. Bushes are not permitted to be planted in the parkways.

Cost-Share Opt-In Option
Homeowners who want to add a tree to the parkway bordering their property, but do not want to plant a tree themselves, may opt into the 50/50 cost-share program.
To be eligible for opt-in, there must be adequate space in the parkway to meet Naperville’s parkway tree planting guidelines.
To opt-in, contact DPW at (630) 420-6095. If the parkway is suitable, the tree will be added to the next available planting season.
Residents should opt in by mid-February for the spring planting season and by mid-August for the fall planting season. Efforts will be made to accommodate planting cycle requests, but not guaranteed. Opt-in participants‘ plantings follow the same process outlined on this page.
New Construction Tree Program
Parkway trees are required at each newly constructed residence and commercial property. The number of trees required is based on the property's total linear street frontage. These trees are paid for during the permitting process, and the City plants them when the lot is at final grade. For more information, call the Department of Public Works (DPW) at (630) 420-6095.
