Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse (PHRN) Program

The Naperville Fire Department offers a course for Registered Nurses (RNs) who are interested in becoming Pre-Hospital Registered Nurses (PHRNs). The program prepares hospital-based RNs for emergency pre-hospital care and is intended to bridge the gap between emergency department clinical knowledge and field-level emergency medical services.

Program Structure

The program takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. over five consecutive Fridays. It consists of:

  • 30 hours of classroom instruction: in-depth lectures, hands-on skills labs and scenario-based training.
  • 10 hours of clinical ride time: Complete ride time with frontline Naperville Fire Department medic units.

Registration

You must have a current, unrestricted Illinois Registered Nurse license to register for the program. The fee is $300 paid by credit card.

Please register for the Aug. 7 session only. Once registered for that day, the fire department will contact the attendee (using the email provided at registration) with a code that can be used to register for the other four sessions at no additional cost.
