Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse (PHRN) Program
The Naperville Fire Department offers a course for Registered Nurses (RNs) who are interested in becoming Pre-Hospital Registered Nurses (PHRNs). The program prepares hospital-based RNs for emergency pre-hospital care and is intended to bridge the gap between emergency department clinical knowledge and field-level emergency medical services.
Program Structure
The program takes place over five consecutive Fridays:
- 30 hours of classroom instruction: in-depth lectures, hands-on skills labs and scenario-based training.
- 10 hours of clinical ride time: Complete ride time with frontline Naperville Fire Department medic units.
Registration
You must have a current, unrestricted Illinois Registered Nurse license to register for the program. Registration for the August 2026 class is now closed. Check back for the next available program.
Program Benefits
This course is developed and taught by Naperville Fire Department PHRNs. Through their experience and mentorship, RNs will gain knowledge of fire department operations, crew dynamics and field leadership to position themselves for future career opportunities in pre-hospital emergency care.
